Once your checkbook is balanced, you should take a moment to look at the wealth of information contained therein. What? What is this wealth of information you are talking about? Try looking at your checkbook as a snap shot of your spending habits over time. By looking at what you purchase, where you go to purchase it, and how frequently you travel there to purchase it; it will soon be clear to your brain that all of those little trips to the store sure do add up! Look at all the gas you are using, and the wear and tear you are putting on your vehicle. Since you are spending the money already, you might as well purchase the items once a week and not on an everyday basis. Likewise, since you already know the items that you purchase on a daily basis, you might consider buying them in bulk (only if bulk means costing less!).

If you are working towards a savings goal, using a word processor or writing them out will require constant updating. With a spreadsheet, you can simple add in how much more youve saved, and if you had the right formulas set up, it will do it all for you. First, set up a different sheet for your long term goals and your short term goals. You can have long term goals and then break them up into short term goals as well as have separate goals. Make the sheet look appealing with bold headers and colors. If you dont know how to use excel or other spreadsheet programs, you really only need the basics. Search the net to find out how to get started with spreadsheets.

The spreadsheet was introduced back in the 1980s and evolved into a complex program, but with the right experience it can be an effective tool for estimating large or small projects. Standalone programs work fine for estimating large projects; however they cannot estimate all structural elements of the project, such as, concrete, reinforcement, form-work, excavation, and back-fill at one time. Because of this restriction, contractors are forced to develop spreadsheet calculators ensuring bids were covering all required disciplines in their bids to ensure correctness. Construction bids missing important materials or a labor calculation is the number one reason companies incur large loses on projects they would generally have slim profits designed into the bid.

After measuring and counting I take my numbers and go to my office and prepare my estimate. If you do a search in Ezines, you will find other articles by me describing how I use the Excel Spread Sheet to total up and multiply high time factors to those elements of the job that are over eight foot high. Why? It takes you a lot more time to paint a window at twenty feet that it does at eight feet of height. After I total everything using the formulas built into the spreadsheet, I go to my estimating software and prepare the estimate. I itemize everything, I never do an estimate that says $2000 (or whatever amount it is), for painting the interior. I itemize everything, and its easier because that is how I count things. Also, because if I count 16 shutters and when I am painting them I count 20, I tell the customer that I only charged for 16, and they can see it in black and white, so they have to pay extra for the extra shutters, this way I dont get cheated. Anyway the subject of itemizing your estimate is a whole new article.

I use a measuring wheel. I never use a tape measure any more. Tapes are too slow and usually only measure up to thirty-five feet. The measuring wheel can measure to one thousand feet and it costs the same as a big tape measure. Measuring wheels are usually made by the same companies that make tape measure, like Lufkin or Stanley, and they dont break as often as tape measures. Once you use a measuring wheel, you probably wont go back to a tape measure. I used to use the infra-red measuring device but I find them way too inaccurate. Usually, I measure before I start counting things like windows. Once I begin to count windows and molding, I make note of anything that will add or take away time, which means adding to the cost or lessening the cost. When I count windows, I make three columns, one for windows that are located below eight feet, one column for windows below fifteen feet, and one for windows twenty feet and above. This also applies to molding or anything else heights above eight feet, like dormers, ceiling medallions or whatever.

Then youve come to the right place. The LEFT or RIGHT function returns the leftmost or rightmost characters from a text value. Example: =LEFT(A2,3) If value in cell A2 were 184770 the formula would display the number 4. =Right(B3,2) If value in cell B3 were 16579 the formula would display the number 7. LEN (length) returns the number of characters in a text string. Example: =LEN(A2) If the value in cell A2 is 16498 then the formula will display 5. Combine the two in a single formula example. Say you have a single digit which indicates length in.125 increments. Double digits indicates length in whole inches AND.125 increments. =IF(LEN(D2)=2,LEFT(D2,1)+(RIGHT(D2,1)*0.125),RIGHT(D2,1)*0.125) If the length of the value of cell D2 (the length number) equals 2 (which means it is double digit), then add the left digit plus the right digit multiplied by 0.125, otherwise take the single digit and multiply by 0.125.

It may seem trivial to even spend time on thinking about your formatting, but if you follow a few simple rules your brilliant spreadsheet will not only look good but do your calculations speedy and efficiently. Lets keep it simple and jump straight into the simple rules of formatting with a few great tips to give you the edge on formatting. 1. Keep it simple. Spreadsheet. Lots of people spend lots of time formatting their spreadsheets that are singing and dancing, having all the bells and whistles you could think of. This a lot of the time looks great to the author of the spreadsheet, but very confusing or just looks a mess to users.. 2. Do not over format. Yes make it easy to read and follow, but do go to far, this will add bulk and can inhibit the performance of Excel. in particular conditional formatting can slow down Excel, as it continually recalculates.

If your boss depends on Excel spreadsheets as primary sources of management information, here are some tips to consider. You may be receiving some of the spreadsheets your boss gets. You may even be in charge of preparing a few of those spreadsheets that your boss depends on for management information. If both you and he are getting information from spreadsheets submitted by other departments or staff, then he depends on them for that information. But what if you were in charge of consolidating the information from all those spreadsheets? What if you assembled all that information into an Excel dashboard that you send to your boss every day? Why, then your boss would read YOUR work first and foremost. He would rely on your dashboard as THE most important spreadsheet he receives.
