Example: If you go to Sears and buy pants and then you go to Kohls and buy a shirt the initial category is Clothing, not a category for Sears and on for Kohls. The object of categories is for you to learn exactly what you are spending your money on each month. The categories are not meant to see exactly where you spent the money. You need to know "what" you spent the money on not "where." I hope this is starting to make sense; you cant really get into budget mode until you know how much you are currently spending in any one category by calculating your monthly bills. You cant get to placing items that you buy into categories until you list them - that is you write them down! How many times did you go to lunch this week? How much did you spend on lunches? What about insurance costs, if you wrote down all of the insurance, home, car, boat, motorcycle, RV, life, AFLAC, etc how much does all of that cost? Can you get a better deal on insurance? Lets face it; you are going to buy things each and every month. There is no way around it. Throughout your life there may be times where the monthly bills get out of control. Your goal is gain back control. There is an easy way to start... create a spreadsheet, list all of your monthly bills, categorize each bill and then let the spreadsheet do the bill calculations.

It still amazes me to learn how many companies are managing their IT networks using XL Spreadsheets. This is either a compliment to Microsoft for creating a powerful spreadsheet application that serves many purposes or is it a sign of lunacy on behalf of IT? Many businesses still rely on using XL spreadsheets to keep tabs on their IT infrastructure, be that running an IT Help desk or auditing their network. Is this just a case of the old school verses technical phobia or is it just budget conscious IT departments? Whats wrong with the good old spreadsheet anyway one might ask? Why be sucked into using technology for technology sake?

This also works well among food servers, whose job takes a toll on their feet. One group of servers can staff the floor while another group take inventory, haul the supplies, or do some errands out of the restaurant. 3. Set up your employee schedule at least a month ahead of Christmas and New Year. A schedule set a month before the busiest season of the year takes care of any vacation time left for your employees. They will be more than willing to work extra hours if they can have more time spent with their families during the holidays. However, be very strict with the agreed restaurant spreadsheets. Your employees should understand that others depend on their commitment to show up early and work on the days they agreed to be on the job.

Last night, a factory manager in Singapore stared at his Dell Latitude waiting for his master inventory to be updated by his supplier in Korea. Meantime in Seoul, emails are frantically exchanged among inventory clerks at three factories to produce a final document. Yesterday afternoon a CFO submitted financials for the Quarterly Board report. This morning his admin found out the most current HR data was on HRversion5.xls, not on HRversion4.xls that he used. The National Sales Manager finally received monthly forecast spreadsheets from six Regional Managers, who each collected spreadsheets from their respective sales teams. Even though it took two hours to painstakingly combine all the data, cut & paste errors produced an overage of more than $1 million in forecast revenue.

If the employee has a major role, such as a Best Man for the wedding, then prioritize his request, too. b. Is it possible to have someone in the group act as a substitute? If an employee substitutes for another, then offer the substitute additional time off or a monetary reward aside from the added wages he earns from working the extra hours. 5. Setting up an employee schedule integrates the work done by employees on different shifts. Employees assigned to the morning shift are expected to open the restaurant and prepare it for the days work. On the other hand, employees on the night shift clean up the restaurant and put away the equipment and supplies. Each shift might not meet each other during the day, but each one should work in tandem with the other, especially in following through procedures during closing time. Food left outside becomes fodder for rats and cockroaches, which cause problems for the day shift people who had to deal with the pests and the health risks involved.

The idea of two or more people bound by a common interest can be traced to mans earliest endeavors. More recently, and thanks to the growth of the Web, thousands of "communities" have sprung up to serve people with specific hobbies, interests, or political leanings. The advent of Web 2.0 technology has led to hosted communities where members can interact with people of mutual interests. Sites like My Space and Facebook were among the first to exploit the Internet community concept. For the most part, these sites are geared toward consumers and individuals who interact in their personal time. But what about business? Is the concept of community relevant to them? Absolutely - in spades!

Are you working with the latest version or is someone else out there making further edits? And with the looming presence of Sarbanes Oxley, tracking the formation of the work product is now a corporate imperative. Safety: There are good reasons a company spends millions of dollars on security for its servers and its data. In the wrong hands, company secrets can be divulged or employee information can be compromised. Email and Office applications have come a long way in the last 20 years. But business imperative notwithstanding and despite the dependence on these technologies, by themselves in their current state, they represent a band-aid, not a breakthrough.
