The most important thing I always keep in mind when creating a new Excel work book or worksheet is I NEVER assume that I will not want to add in new formulas or data to the spreadsheet because it is more than likely I will. With this is the forefront of your mind I would always spend around 80% of my time planning the spreadsheet and only 20% of my time implementing it. If you have not carried out spreadsheet design in this way before it may seem a little over the top, extreme or way out, or even inefficient, but the return on the investment of this time planning is extreme and way out also. Believe me it is quickly paid back over a very short amount of time. Once you have used this method and spend most of your time planning, the actual planning of the Excel spreadsheet in itself gets easier and more efficient. As we know the best return of investment to is to carry out an action once, and then reap the rewards over and over again by re using this action. In Excel an obvious example would be to create a macro that automates some activity you carry out on a regular basis or to create a template that will be re- used time and time again.
