Even the most responsible person will encounter challenges, but the best way to succeed is to plan, plan, and plan some more. Setting up Your Monthly Budget Spreadsheet Setting up your own monthly budget spreadsheet is easy to do in popular programs like Excel and Quicken. Developing an estimate of the costs youre likely to accrue while out on your own makes good sense. That way, youll be able to quickly determine what is affordable and potentially avoid falling into a bad situation. If youre thinking about renting a place, check out the neighborhood, and better yet, talk to the neighbors. In addition to paying rent, some of the major costs that should be included on the monthly budget spreadsheet are the utilities. Ask the landlord how much utilities they typically run and make a quick call to the utility companies to double-check the accuracy of the landlords estimate.

It seems unlikely that Excel spreadsheets will disappear from the finance department completely; admittedly, they are still a really useful tool for auditing, even for very large businesses (of 1,000+ headcounts) and they will probably remain the go-to program of choice for creating graphs and charts. However, businesses that are managing to grow and are serious about both productivity and regulatory compliance will likely move their reconciliation and monthly close process to specialist programs, as opposed to makeshift spreadsheets. Especially as the need for advanced reporting and intuitive financial analysis expands beyond the capabilities of Excel.

Keep to universal colours if you can, I find that black, white and grey colours work best, they look neat and professional but give the spreadsheet added value. 4. Adhere to default formatting of cells, that is text is aligned to the left and numbers to the right- this is what Excel expects. This can greatly speed up troubleshooting if you having issued with a formulas or referencing cells, as at a glance you can tell if the cells should be formatted and text or numeric. 5. Format cells as text only if you really have to, as all of the data you enter into a text formatted cell becomes text, even if you meant it to be numeric, this is one thing you do not want- any formula cells to be formatted as text.

Using your computers mouse, right click anywhere within the highlighted area. This will bring up a pop-up menu. On that menu is the option "column width". Click on that option. This will bring up a window asking you to enter in the width of the columns. If there is a number already in that box you will need to erase that first by highlighting it and pressing your "delete" key. Now type in the number "12" and click the "Ok" button. You should now see that all of the highlighted columns have changed to the size of 12. Repeat the steps above to alter the sizes and find one that looks more visually appealing for the spreadsheet that you are working on. Remember that at anytime you can undo what you just did by clicking the "Edit" menu option at the top of the screen and click the sub-menu option of "undo".

When developing a spread sheet solution in Excel, you make decisions and change features and formulas which at the time make perfect sense and have a logical flow. Once you come back to amend, or enhance or troubleshoot your spread sheet, what made sense at the time of development, may not be so obvious at a later date. So here are my top 5 things to avoid when developing a spreadsheet solution to enable you to troubleshoot any issues and make your spread sheet as efficient as possible. 1. Merged Cells. They may look good, but they can play havoc on the functionality of you spreadsheet including losing the ability to sort data correctly or run VBA as it does not handle merged cells very well. You also lose the functionality of a normal data table in Excel; that is the great functions such as Pivot Tables, SUMIF, COUNTIF etc the list goes on!. If you want to use Auto Fill- no chance with merged cells and do not expect to be able to copy and paste either.

Another useful function is that you can add hyperlinks to your PowerPoint slides that lead to your MS Excel documents. This can prove useful should you want to have spreadsheets available to add extra information, if it is required during your presentation. Once you have created charts in MS Excel you may like any changes to them to be linked to PowerPoint slides. This is possible using the Microsoft Office Excel Chart Object, which allows you to create links to diagrams that have been updated, ensuring your presentation contains the most recent adaptations to spreadsheet data. Another application that you can paste your MS Excel data into is MS Word. This can be beneficial to those who need to create informative documents that feature spreadsheets.

I use a measuring wheel. I never use a tape measure any more. Tapes are too slow and usually only measure up to thirty-five feet. The measuring wheel can measure to one thousand feet and it costs the same as a big tape measure. Measuring wheels are usually made by the same companies that make tape measure, like Lufkin or Stanley, and they dont break as often as tape measures. Once you use a measuring wheel, you probably wont go back to a tape measure. I used to use the infra-red measuring device but I find them way too inaccurate. Usually, I measure before I start counting things like windows. Once I begin to count windows and molding, I make note of anything that will add or take away time, which means adding to the cost or lessening the cost. When I count windows, I make three columns, one for windows that are located below eight feet, one column for windows below fifteen feet, and one for windows twenty feet and above. This also applies to molding or anything else heights above eight feet, like dormers, ceiling medallions or whatever.

For this matter, budgeting software can only be regarded as a really good one if it is user-friendly and the input of information is hassle free. The moment that the initial setup is done, transaction recording and processing is expected to automatically take place. Good Reporting: Its Elements Good financial software must possess reporting elements in the module of the money management tool that you are using. These features must also be intuitive and straightforward to use, for they are the real hallmark of the reporting features of a better software. Basic Income and Spending If these two do not exist, your software can be regarded as completely futile. Income and spending must be easily known with a mere push of a certain button.
