Whats more, the damage done can also affect public perception and trust in your brand, leading to less tangible but just as dangerous losses. Is it possible to move away from spreadsheets? For smaller businesses, the number of accounts needing to be reconciled is relatively small, so it makes sense for smaller businesses to continue using a combination of spreadsheets and QuickBooks. In turn, the team that manages the financial close process will also be relatively small, perhaps just one or two finance staff, so there is also less room for data handling errors. However, as the number of accounts to reconcile grows and the team managing your monthly close process is expanded, errors can easily worm their way in to the reconciliation process. Once a business has grown, it makes sense to move away from Excel spreadsheets and QuickBooks, particularly for tasks like reconciling. At its capacity, the finance department of a large organisation can generate up to five hundred spreadsheets a month - so its easy to see how errors and duplications can creep in.

Calculator SpreadsheetBy Kathie Horne. Are you wondering "How do I use the LEFT, RIGHT, and LEN functions in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets?" Then youve come to the right place. The LEFT or RIGHT function returns the leftmost or rightmost characters from a text value. Example: =LEFT(A2,3) If value in cell A2 were 184770 the formula would display the number 4. =Right(B3,2) If value in cell B3 were 16579 the formula would display the number 7. LEN (length) returns the number of characters in a text string. Example: =LEN(A2) If the value in cell A2 is 16498 then the formula will display 5. Combine the two in a single formula example. Say you have a single digit which indicates length in.125 increments. Double digits indicates length in whole inches AND.125 increments. =IF(LEN(D2)=2,LEFT(D2,1)+(RIGHT(D2,1)*0.125),RIGHT(D2,1)*0.125) If the length of the value of cell D2 (the length number) equals 2 (which means it is double digit), then add the left digit plus the right digit multiplied by 0.125, otherwise take the single digit and multiply by 0.125.

You can add more data if you would like or even use an already existing spreadsheet. The choice is completely up to you; however the steps to reformat the column widths are all the same as you will soon see. The next step is to highlight the columns that you want to reformat. To reformat the columns we are using in our example, using the month names, you need to click on the column header labeled "A". Now hold down the "shift" key and click the column header labeled "L". In other words you are clicking the first column and the last column. If you chose to use your own spreadsheet, your columns that you use may be different. You could also click on column header "A" and holding down the left mouse button, drag the cursor over top of the final column, in this case "L", and let go of the mouse button. Either way is fine.

Calculator SpreadsheetBy Autumn Clark. Its tough to get recognition in the office. If your boss depends on Excel spreadsheets as primary sources of management information, here are some tips to consider. You may be receiving some of the spreadsheets your boss gets. You may even be in charge of preparing a few of those spreadsheets that your boss depends on for management information. If both you and he are getting information from spreadsheets submitted by other departments or staff, then he depends on them for that information. But what if you were in charge of consolidating the information from all those spreadsheets? What if you assembled all that information into an Excel dashboard that you send to your boss every day? Why, then your boss would read YOUR work first and foremost. He would rely on your dashboard as THE most important spreadsheet he receives.

In an analysis of multiple studies dating back to 2008, Marketwatch reported last year that almost 90% of Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets contain errors. Even when created with the utmost care, the number and complexity of the formulas contained in our spreadsheets create significant opportunities for bad data. With about 1 Billion users of Microsoft Office users in the world, the absolute number of errors that potentially exist range in the hundreds of millions. We have some thoughts on how to prevent errors in Excel spreadsheets. Here are three of them: Most Errors are Caused by Bad Calculations: Check Your Formulas Methods of testing your formulas range from the simple to the absurdly complex. Lets ignore the stuff on the right side of the spectrum, and stick to what we can do right now. Did you know that highlighting a cell that contains a formula and pressing "Ctrl + [" will reveal the cells that feed into the total? Its a simple yet effective way to understand your data sources and identify what you missed, and what might have been double-counted. Simple stuff.

Calculator SpreadsheetBy Sabrina Walters. The first thing I do when I estimate a painting job is to get a feel for the customers motivation for their paint job. Are they looking to sell? Are they fixing the home up for a special event, like wedding or birthday? Or is it just overdue and really needs a paint job? The next thing I do after I have digested their reason for painting their home, is to look at the job and IMAGINE doing the job. Go through the job in your mind. Making notes about the job, things that may affect the time spent working. It could be anything like we cant use a ladder to paint the family room ceiling because the room is too large and we have to cut in the lights, or there is a lot of spackling to do like cracks and nail pops. Try to get a "feel for the job". Will it take longer than usual, or will it go faster than normal? Is the area cluttered? Will you be able to move fast or slow? Is there going to be a lot of traffic? Are there kids or pets? I do all this before I measure.

Calculator SpreadsheetBy Freda Hernandez. If you seek to speed up copying a cell across a row or down a column you need to select the desired cell which needs to be copied. After that you move the mouse cursor till the time it relocates itself above the bottom right corner of the cell. Now youll see that the cursor changes into a + sign. Then you need to hold down the left mouse button and drag it across either the row or column till the time all the cells you want to paste into are already selected. Youll see that if you release the button now your first cell will now be copied to all the selected cells. Instant Charts in Excel Spreadsheets OK this very sweet. If you want to make a chart from a given table in Excel simply select the required cells in the table of numbers and hit F11. Presto we now have a chart!
