I use a measuring wheel. I never use a tape measure any more. Tapes are too slow and usually only measure up to thirty-five feet. Once you use a measuring wheel, you probably wont go back to a tape measure. I used to use the infra-red measuring device but I find them way too inaccurate. Usually, I measure before I start counting things like windows. Once I begin to count windows and molding, I make note of anything that will add or take away time, which means adding to the cost or lessening the cost. When I count windows, I make three columns, one for windows that are located below eight feet, one column for windows below fifteen feet, and one for windows twenty feet and above. This also applies to molding or anything else heights above eight feet, like dormers, ceiling medallions or whatever.

If you have not carried out spreadsheet design in this way before it may seem a little over the top, extreme or way out, or even inefficient, but the return on the investment of this time planning is extreme and way out also. Believe me it is quickly paid back over a very short amount of time. Once you have used this method and spend most of your time planning, the actual planning of the Excel spreadsheet in itself gets easier and more efficient. As we know the best return of investment to is to carry out an action once, and then reap the rewards over and over again by re using this action. In Excel an obvious example would be to create a macro that automates some activity you carry out on a regular basis or to create a template that will be re- used time and time again. This is my aim with this approach to spreadsheet building. To really plan the spreadsheet, and dont be afraid to spend a decent amount of time on it.
