The most important thing I always keep in mind when creating a new Excel work book or worksheet is I NEVER assume that I will not want to add in new formulas or data to the spreadsheet because it is more than likely I will. With this is the forefront of your mind I would always spend around 80% of my time planning the spreadsheet and only 20% of my time implementing it. If you have not carried out spreadsheet design in this way before it may seem a little over the top, extreme or way out, or even inefficient, but the return on the investment of this time planning is extreme and way out also. Believe me it is quickly paid back over a very short amount of time. Once you have used this method and spend most of your time planning, the actual planning of the Excel spreadsheet in itself gets easier and more efficient. As we know the best return of investment to is to carry out an action once, and then reap the rewards over and over again by re using this action. In Excel an obvious example would be to create a macro that automates some activity you carry out on a regular basis or to create a template that will be re- used time and time again. This is my aim with this approach to spreadsheet building. To really plan the spreadsheet, and dont be afraid to spend a decent amount of time on it. My advice to you would be try this out on your next spreadsheet even if it seems a bit alien. Let me know how you find this approach to spreadsheet building.
In order to ensure that you are provided with high-quality spreadsheet solutions and that they are 100 percent compatible with the profile and size of your business, you need to possess performing, state-of-the-art spreadsheet programs. However, it is important to note that the entire process of designing and creating your own spreadsheet solutions by using spreadsheet-generating programs is time consuming and requires a good level of expertise. Without the help of a specialized team of experienced programmers and mathematicians, the process of obtaining efficient spreadsheet solutions can be very challenging. On the other hand, to hire and permanently maintain a team in charge of creating the right spreadsheet solutions for your business would be very costly. Added with the costs of regular spreadsheet-generating program purchases, the costs involved by forming and keeping a well-trained team of spreadsheet designers in your company can generate considerable financial losses to the business you are running, especially when you are the owner of a struggling micro-business. To eliminate the problems behind spreadsheet designing, the best option is to purchase high-quality ready-made spreadsheet solutions from a specialized, reliable provider.
XL Spreadsheet lunacy in IT? It still amazes me to learn how many companies are managing their IT networks using XL Spreadsheets. This is either a compliment to Microsoft for creating a powerful spreadsheet application that serves many purposes or is it a sign of lunacy on behalf of IT? Many businesses still rely on using XL spreadsheets to keep tabs on their IT infrastructure, be that running an IT Help desk or auditing their network. Is this just a case of the old school verses technical phobia or is it just budget conscious IT departments? Whats wrong with the good old spreadsheet anyway one might ask? Why be sucked into using technology for technology sake?
